Chrianna Short: Selling Dreams

passionatefanfictionbka:

A/N: An old short that was sitting in my drafts. Figured I finish it and post it. Enjoy!

Rihanna looked around her house and huffed before she just started grabbing photos and items that were spread out and mixed in with her decor. She had spent enough time playing this role and she wanted her life back, as much back of it that she could get. She grabbed a huge duffel bag and started throwing things into it. Just as she went to clear off the table behind her couch, she bumped into Melissa.

“Damn Girl, where you rushing off too?” Mel asked as she gingerly rubbed her shoulder.

“Nowhere. I didn’t see you there. When’d you get here?”

“Just a few minutes ago. You obviously didn’t hear me come in either.”

“Yea, I was cleaning up and wasn’t paying attention.”

“Cleaning up what?” Mel looked around the room, “where’s all the pictures? Don’t you think he’s gonna be a little suspicious?”

“I don’t care what he is especially since he’s not my problem.”

“How is your man not your problem?”

“He’s not my man. Never was. Don’t know how many times I have to say that.”

“Well according to media and your PR, he was your man so outside of this house he was your man. What happened?”

“Nothing. I’m finished.”

“Finished what?”

“I’m finished lying. I’m finished pretending. I’m tired, Mel.”

“Does he know that?”

“I don’t give a fuck what he does or doesn’t know.”

“Whoa there, what is going on?”

“I just told you. I’m finished.”

“Robs, that’s not it. Something happened.”

“Nothing happened, honest. I’m really just over all of this. The trips and shit, it gets really boring after a while, especially if it’s not with who you want to be with.”

“Chris know you done?”

“This has nothing to do with him either.”

“That’s not what I asked you. Does Chris know you are done?”

“He knows I was thinking about it.”

“Before me?”

“I didn’t want the judgment, Mel.”

“When have I ever judged you?”

“Not out loud but I could feel the way you’ve been looking at me since this started.”

“That wasn’t judgment, that was disappointment. I told you from the beginning that this wasn’t a good idea. You’ve been letting PR run your life for the last few years and just when I thought you were settled into your own, you let them pull you right back in.”

“Mel, I made the decision to go along with it.”

“For what purpose other than media bullshit?”

“It wasn’t media bullshit to me.”

“And what was it to Chris then?”

“I don’t want to talk about him.”

“You might want to.”

“Why is that?”

“Because I’m right behind you.”

Rihanna jerked around at the sound of Chris’s voice. She smiled before she could catch herself and Chris chuckled, “you look more shocked than I thought you would be. What’s up?”

“Nothing. Why? How are you here?”

“I drove here, what do you mean?”

“How’d you even know I was in town? I didn’t call you.”

“You normally don’t and somehow I still have perfect timing,” Chris walked towards her and plopped down in an armchair, “besides I could always sense when something was wrong and considering this room, I was right.”

“Nothing is wrong.”

“You don’t pull a Bernadine in Waiting to Exhale for nothing. What’s going on?”

“I really don’t have to answer you.”

“You don’t but you will. Eventually.”

Melissa laughed causing Rihanna to remember she was in the room, “there is nothing funny about this.”

“Oh there’s a lot funny but I’m gonna go to my room and laugh. It’s tense in here.”

Melissa patted Chris’s shoulder as she walked past him to leave the living room. Rihanna turned her attention back to him, “why are you here, Chris?’

“I told you that I sensed something was wrong and…I miss you.”

“I just saw you in New York.”

“That was well over two months ago. Still not used to these long gaps.”

“We’ve dealt with longer.”

“That’s when we really didn’t have any options.”

“Who says now that we do have options?”

“We did especially once we started this up again.”

“This what?”

“What? Does your nigga have the room wired for sound or you just acting dense on purpose?”

“Excuse me?”

“You’re excused.”

“You don’t get to barge in my house in the middle of my recharging session, demanding answers to shit that isn’t your business.”

“All of this is my business.”

“Really? How?”

“Because you’re my business and have been over the last decade. I told you this from Matt to Drake to this Arab nigga, I don’t give a fuck about no PR stunts and relationships, we’ve been in this from the beginning and it hasn’t changed. When I feel like something is wrong, I’m gonna come whether you ask me to or not, guns blazing if I have to. We’ve been good for this long so clearly something has changed if you giving me attitude like this and I haven’t seen you in so long.”

Rihanna sighed and ran her fingers through her hair before settling her hands on her waist. Chris was right; he didn’t do anything he wouldn’t normally do when she came in town and she was overreacting.

“Look, I’m sorry. I’m just- I don’t know.”

“What is it? Is the pressure getting to you? Are you changing your mind? We’ve been communicating so well up until now, just let me know what’s up.”

“It’s not you. I just don’t have my head on too straight.”

“Then let me help you, all you gotta do is talk to me, you know that.”

“I know Babe, it’s just- I’m still trying to figure it out. I feel out of control.”

“So stop trying to figure it out and just relax. You’re not gonna gain more control by acting out of control. Forcing things has never been helpful for you.”

“You’re right.”

“So sit down. Stop trying so hard to make things happen and just let them happen.”

Rihanna frowned and Chris chuckled, “what’s the matter, Baby Girl?”

“When the hell you’d get so wise?”

“I’ve had a lot of practice. Now can I get a proper greeting or you still taking your anger out on me?”

Rihanna rolled her eyes and she moved to sit on Chris’s lap. He kissed her and she laid her head on his shoulder, “I wasn’t taking my anger out on you. I was just frustrated.”

“Same difference.”

Chris made circles on her exposed thigh with his fingertip, “I missed you. Why didn’t you call me when you got in town?”

“Because I’m not staying long. I’m actually out of here tomorrow.”

“Even more reason why you should’ve called me.”

“I also didn’t come here by myself.”

“Ah, now that makes sense. Where’s your Arab money?”

“Fuck you.”

Chris laughed, “I’m serious. Where he at?”

“He left already.”

“Argument?”

“Gotta actually talk to have an argument. I’m just over everything and told him to go. Services no longer needed.”

“Should’ve never enlisted them in the first place.”

“I am not having this discussion with you again, Chris.”

“We’re not, I’m just saying.”

“No more saying. You’ve expressed your dislike with the arrangement enough over the last year or so. You didn’t like him, I get it.”

“So you my girl again or nah?”

“Always been yours.”

“But am I still sharing you or no?”

“No.”

“That’s all I need to hear.”

“But we’re not together, Chris.”

“By whose definition?”

“Anybody’s definition. I need time, Chris.”

“I can give you time. I’ve always given you that.”

“I mean real time. Not you sitting in the corner, staring at your watch and willing me to hurry up time.”

“I do not- nevermind.”

“That’s what I thought.”

“Well what do you expect? We were on a good path, babies, marriage, rings and then you spring him on me. Everytime I agree to give you time, you end up giving your time to somebody else. Regardless if it’s a real relationship or not, you’re giving time you promised to me, to somebody not me so yea, it makes me hesitate with this time shit.”

“It’s not like you’ve been waiting all alone.”

“Actually I have. Commenting on IG and shit doesn’t mean nothing when it doesn’t translate to real life. ‘I’ve been chilling, minding my business, and taking care of myself. I’ve done nothing but wait by myself.”

“I never asked you to do that.”

“You’ve never asked me to do a lot of things but you knew I would, did you not?”

“I did.”

“So I rest my case.”

“This isn’t easy, Chris.”

“I never said it was but you aren’t making it any easier either.”

“Clearly.”

“So what exactly is your next step?”

“Haven’t figured it out yet. I really don’t know what I want or what I want to do.”

“Just chill for a minute. Give yourself time to relax and actually sleep for a while, it’ll come to you.”

“You’re always good for a positive thought.”

“I don’t like seeing you stressed out, Baby Girl. Makes me anxious and puts me on offense.”

“Chris, you can’t protect me from myself.”

“I can try.”

Rihanna laughed as she leaned up to kiss his lips, “what’s your plans?”

“I came here for you. It’s up to you.”

“I just needed to clear my head, probably should’ve come here alone in that case.”

“That’s very true but you also had an image to upkeep so a certain presence makes sense.”

Rihanna sighed, “can I quit?”

“You can do whatever you want to do. Why are you asking me?”

“Because you’re my conscience right now. Can I quit?”

“Depends on why you want to quit.”

“What do you mean?”

“Are you quitting because you’re done or because you’re running?”

Rihanna went to say something then closed her mouth. Chris gently rubbed her thigh, “I am the last person to be giving advice on anything because I still don’t completely have my shit together but I do know what happens when you make decisions based on fear and not fact. I’ve wasted great opportunities doing it.”

“Like?”

“Our entire relationship. Past and present.”

“We’ve both done it if that’s the case.”

“We have, I just actually acknowledge it.”

“I really have no idea what to do.”

“You could start by stopping selling the public dreams.”

“What?”

“You keep pulling people into your PR antics, and that’s what they are no matter how you try to justify it, for the sake of keeping up an image that the public is comfortable with instead of actually being yourself. You being a savage is a cover. You being this pick ‘em and dump ‘em person is a cover. All a mask. You are selling them a version of you that is not real.”

“How would you know that it’s not real?”

“Because I know you. I know you in ways that the public would never get to know you. That’s why you burn out so quickly. That’s why you can’t commit to whatever you’re doing for so long because you’re not being true to you.”

“You’re only saying that because you’re included in what I want to do.”

“I’m saying it because it’s true. Listen, I’ve been out of the picture for extended periods of time and you still stick to the script. You pick people who you don’t really like because you know that they can’t hurt you. I pick people because they’re easy to get and easy to dismiss. I go for ease. You go for comfort.”

Rihanna sucked her teeth as she folded her arms across her chest, “I don’t agree with that.”

“I can accept that, don’t make what I said wrong though.”

“So what about you?”

“What about me? I am a complete and utter fuck up at times, I’m transparent about that. I play games to distract myself and others from reality. I bullshit myself a lot but I know it. I accept it therefore I accept the consequences that come from it. You, on the other hand, not so much.”

“Are you saying that I don’t accept accountability?”

“Yea, pretty much.”

Rihanna pushed off his lap and moved to grab the duffel bag she was holding earlier, “Wow, tell me how you really feel.”

“Baby Girl, if you accept accountability, you wouldn’t be lying and justifying things to anyone, especially not to yourself. You wouldn’t be cleaning out the pictures of a man that you publicly entertained for a year even though you didn’t like him. You wouldn’t be hiding and letting the world turn you into a recluse, just to do what you want to do. You wouldn’t be teasing albums when all you really want to do is make clothes and make up. You’d be upfront and honest regardless of others’ reactions. The fact you haven’t and you can’t even verbally express why without providing justifications for it is exactly why we’re having this conversation. None of this can happen without your participation. You have to be accountable for that.”

“I don’t want to talk about this anymore.”

“That’s fine.”

“And I’d like you to leave.”

“That’s fine too.”

“Are you serious?”

“I didn’t come here to argue with you or make you feel worse but we’ve prided ourselves on being honest with each other thus far so I don’t regret what I’ve said. I’m not judging you because we do what we have to do to survive,” Chris stood up and straightened his pants, “I’ve done worse. I’ve fucked up my life worse so I’m telling you from experience. IF you want to quit, you need to be honest with yourself about why and once you do that, you need to be honest about how you got to this point in the first place. That’s the only way for you to quit in peace because the change of outside circumstances doesn’t get rid of the issues inside you. That much I know for sure even though I’m still figuring out what comes next.”

“And this makes you so much better than me, huh?”

“Absolutely not. I’m still fucking up but I’m honest with myself about why and work on how to not do it again. I backslide every once in a while but I’m human. Maybe if you accepted that part about you, you wouldn’t be working so hard to keep up this image for the world.”

“I went back to you after everything we’ve been through, that wasn’t enough?”

“Wow. I hoped you came back to me because you wanted to, not to make me your redemption story. If loving me was the worst thing you think you’ve done as a human, that’s on you. I think. I’m just your most public mistake. Don’t confuse the two.”

“I never said you were a mistake.”

“Nope but you’re saying it as if our second chance was the only thing you’ve done that others’ didn’t accept. You’re protected but you’re not invincible.”

“Sounds like you want me to fail.”

“I want you to be honest with yourself about who you are so you can stop acting like what you’re pretending to be isn’t a bunch of bullshit. I want you to be successful while being you, the real you.”

“Chris.”

“Rih, Baby Girl, there’s really nothing else to say and I think I’ve pissed you off enough for the night.”

Chris walked over and kissed her cheek before he started walking towards the door, “Tell Mel I said bye. Oh, and you missed a couple pictures on the console.”

He left.

“You know he’s actually right, Robs. He might be a fuck up sometimes but he’s an honest one,” Melissa said as she walked into the room.

“I’m guessing you heard,” Rihanna replied.

“I did. I thought y’all were about to start arguing so I was standing in the hallway.”

“No need. He doesn’t really like to argue with me anymore.”

“That bothers you.”

“It does.”

“Why?”

“It’s uncomfor-” Rihanna stopped mid-sentence, “Am I really that bad? Do I really avoid accountability like that?”

“Nobody can answer that but you. Maybe you really do need time. I’m not saying to shut down into complete isolation but you need to really think about your life and how you want to live it moving forward. Nobody is saying that the world needs to know everything but at least let what you do decide to let them in on, be honest and true to you. If you don’t want to do music or if you only want to do it on your own time, be honest about it. If you want to date, do it but be honest about it. You can be private without treating your personal life as a secret. The best savages are the honest ones.”

Chris had just pulled into his driveway when his phone rang with a FaceTime call. He put the car in park then slid over the answer key, “Hey Baby Girl.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You don’t need to apologize.”

“But I do. I overreacted and it wasn’t fair especially since you came all that way to see me.”

“And you had all right to tell me to leave if you no longer wanted me there. There’s nothing to apologize for.”

“Are you home yet?”

“I just pulled into the driveway. What’s up?”

“Can I stop by?”

“Sure. I’ll order something for us.”

“OK. I’ll see you in a little bit.”

“Cool.”

Love Is Blind: Chapter One

loveisblindfanfictionbka:

“Come on Robs, what could it hurt?”

Robyn looked over at her friend and frowned.

“Online Dating? Really? Do you know the kind of psychos on these sites?”

Leandra sighed, “Girl, ain’t nobody saying marry them but at least try it out. It’s been years since your divorce. Why are you still so gunshy?”

“Well maybe because my ex-husband ripped my heart out my chest.”

“Isn’t that a little dramatic? You and your ex-husband were both childish and lost. I still don’t think you should’ve gotten divorced either.”

“You and everyone else seems to have my failed marriage all figured out.”

“Look, forget about all of that, you need to get back out there, even if it’s just for a night of fun. It wouldn’t kill you.”

“You know what, just to shut you up, I’ll do it.”

“Good, I got your profile all set up, you just need to approve it and submit it.”

“How in the hell? This is the first time we’ve spoken about this.”

“Yea but this was just a minor technicality because I was gonna set you up anyway.”

“Ugh….get away from me.”

Leandra laughed  as she slid her laptop over for Robyn to review the profile. After a few minutes, Robyn nodded her head in approval and pressed publish.

“So now what?”

“Now you wait to see if you get any hits or you just peruse others’ profiles too.”

Robyn was shaking her head before Leandra even finished her statement, “I am not perusing anything. I don’t even want to do this right now.”

“So let the men come to you, it is the natural order of things.”

“I’ma divorce you next.”

“You love me so whatever.”

Robyn laughed as she leaned her head on Leandra’s shoulder, “Le, do you really think this will help?”

“I think it’ll give you something to do while you try to get your life right again. I love you and I know you and I know that your divorce is something that you’re still trying to understand but your life doesn’t have to stop while you’re doing that. Things don’t have to be serious. You don’t have to fall in love with anybody but it wouldn’t hurt to get from behind these walls you’ve erected and live. You owe it to yourself, if nobody else.”

                                              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Daddy, come on, the movie is starting”
Chris smiled as he rushed into the living room with a big bowl of popcorn. He sat next to his 3 year old daughter, Anesa, just as the classic Disney symbol flashed across the big screen.
“You know Princess, you could’ve just paused the tv. This is just a stream.”
“No because you were supposed to be faster anyway.”
Chris chuckled as he kissed her temple. He made the right decision becoming a foster dad two years ago. The little imp had done so much to replace the empty void in his life. He had suffered so much loss, being able to give that extra love to someone felt good. An image flashed in his head and he shook it. Years ago, he thought he had someone but that relationship crashed and burned. It surprised him that he even thought about her sometimes, all these years later.
Just as he started to become enamored with the Princess and The Frog, his phone rang. Anesa glanced over at him as he stepped out into the kitchen to answer it.
“Hello?”
“CB, what’s going on, Bro?”
“Marcus, how you doing?”
“I’m good. I’m moving back to the city so I just wanted to check in and see if we could meet up one of these days.”
“Of course, I’ll see if my sister can watch my daughter so just let me know when.”
“Daughter? A lot has happened, huh?”
“Too much.”
“How’s the wife?”
“Divorced years ago. I thought you knew.”
“I thought you were joking. You really went through with it?”
“We weren’t exactly seeing eye to eye.”
“But you were together for so long since middle school, right?”
“Officially since high school but you’d think that would’ve made our life together much easier, but nope.”
“Wow. We definitely got some catching up to do. Well, I’m back officially on Friday. We can meet at Roddy’s Bar.”
“Cool. 8 good for you?”
“Perfect, Bro. See you then.”
“Bet.”
They hung up and Chris went back to watching TV with Anesa.
                                      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Robyn fought as much as she could to not be curious about the stupid dating app but….that only worked for so long. As she scrolled, the frown in her face just got deeper and deeper. What the hell had the world become? These men were just- no. It was hard being single. She hadn’t been single in years. Scratch that, ever. She’d never been single. She wasn’t used to being alone and being married was supposed to prevent that. Her ex-husband had literally tore her heart in two and she still hadn’t recovered. How two people so in love could be so incompatible baffled her mind to this day? Of course, her people just thought they were too young and just gave up too quickly but what would they know? They didn’t live with them 24/7. Yes, they had awesome memories but all she could remember was how alone she felt when he was in the bed right next to her. How withdrawn he had gotten in the last two years of their marriage. How unsettled she felt. Like she never knew when he would finally explode from holding everything in. She felt like she walked on eggshells her whole marriage but him asking for a divorce shook her to her very core and she had never bounced back from it. She endured his brutal silence, his emotional hardness but yet he was the one who walked away. It just never made sense to her. Just as she was about to close the app, a direct message popped up.

Subject: Hello

Body: Hi, I was browsing your profile and you seemed really interesting. I was wondering if you would like to chat.

Robyn frowned a bit but she clicked on his photo to be directed to his profile. 42 years old. Divorced. One child. College Music Professor.

He seemed harmless. His photo was full length so his face wasn’t the clearest but he looked decent. Besides he’d probably say something weird and she’d never have to meet him in person so what’s the risk and Leandra had listed her under just her initials so it’s not like he’d know her real name anyway.

Re: Hello

Body: Hi, I would love to chat with you. My name’s Anna. Yours?

A few minutes passed before she got a reply

Re: Hello

Body: Christian but my friends and family call me Chris. It’s nice to meet you Anna.

A: Chris? That must be a common name, I know a few of those.

C: I can imagine. Don’t know too many Annas though. Not the typical name of this time

A: It’s a little old school but I like it. I see you’re a music professor

C: Yup. Decided to change career paths once I got divorced a few years ago. You’re a veterinarian?”

A: Yea, I own a clinic and a shelter in the city.

C: No children?”

A: No. Seems like my animals take up all my time.

C: Understandable. Animals can be like children.

A: Definitely. How old is your child?

C: She’s three.

A: That’s an awesome age

C: Very fun and energetic

A: My friends have children so I definitely imagine. Have you lived in the city long?

C: Just a few years. I was working at another college when the possibility of tenureship opened up at Columbia. Normally that can take years so I got lucky for the invite.

A: you work at Columbia University? That is awesome

C: I think the shock still hasn’t worn off. Kind of waiting for them to take it back at some point

A: Lol when I got the keys to my clinic, I felt the same way

C: Where’d you go to school?

A: Stanford for undergrad. University of California, Davis for veterinary school.

C: Pretty far from home, huh?

A:New York has always been the place for me. I always knew I’d end up here. You?

C: I’m from down south so that’s where my soft spot is. I did my undergrad and grad at Stanford though.

A: Wow talk about a small world.  It is a large school so I’m not surprised we haven’t met unless we have.

C: Probably not, don’t remember many Annas there

A: True. How do you like being a professor?

C: It’s cooler than I thought it would be. My previous job had a little bit more excitement but after some personal issues then my divorce, I had had enough excitement to last a lifetime.

A: My divorce kind of knocked me off balance so I can understand wanting to start over

C: How long were you married?

A: Three years. You?

C: Same. Together?

A: Over ten years. You?

C: Same. Bad ending?

A: I really don’t know. It wasn’t the best situation but it wasn’t the worst. I think abrupt would be a better word. You?

C: I walked away. I wasn’t the best husband but I think we really outgrew each other.

A: That can happen. How old were you?

C: 35. You?

A: 34. A lot can change in over ten years

C: True. I don’t know if she knew that though

A: did you try to tell her?

C: Honestly no but that’s partly why I walked away. I wasn’t any good for her let alone for myself. I struggled a lot emotionally back then, I still do now sometimes. She didn’t need that weight in her life

A: Did she say that or did you make that decision for her?

C: Both.

A: Ah. I’m sorry

C: No need. She was better off without me anyway

A: you still think about her?

C: I try not to. It hurts. Failure sucks.

A: tell me about it. Have you seen her over the years?

C:No. We both moved away once we got divorced. Don’t really know where she went to be honest

A: Same. Some things are just better left alone, I guess

C: True.

A: You know Chris, this was fun. I was a little nervous about this online thing

C: Really? I’ve done it once or twice before. It’s not too bad if you take it for what it is

A: And that is?

C: Just a way to meet people. Doesn’t have to go further than a conversation unless you let it

A: That is very true.

C: If it’s agreeable to you. I’d love to talk to you again

A: I’d like that

C: Great. I guess, until next time

A: Have a good night

C: You as well

Robyn closed out of the app after reading Chris’s last message. They had a lot in common, a lot more than her ex-husband. She got a little nervous when he said his name was Chris but once he clarified that his full name was Christian, she could let out a breath. Her ex-husband’s name when shortened was Chris but his full name was Christopher. Christopher was a common name but she really didn’t need that reminder of him too.

Chris dropped his phone onto his nightstand just as Anesa ran into his room. He laughed as she tried to climb onto his bed before leaning over to pick her up, “what’s the matter Love Bug?”

“Can I sleep in here with you?”

“Of course you can. Did something happen?”

“I had a bad dream.”

“Aww…I’m sorry, Love Bug. Come on, get under the covers.

Anesa climbed under the blankets as Chris turned off the lights. She cuddled onto his chest and Chris hugged her close, “Comfortable?”

“Yes. Goodnight Daddy.

“Goodnight Love Bug.”

                                     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So….how was it?” Leandra asked as her and Robyn sat down for breakfast.
“It was a nice conversation. He seemed like a decent guy.”
“What’s his name?”
“Christian but people call him Chris.”
“You really have a thing for Chris’s, huh?”
“Don’t say that. Chris is just a common name.”
“It is but what a coincidence.”
“Yea.”
“So what does he do?”
“He teaches music at Columbia.”
“Nice. Educated. Kids?”
“A daughter.”
“Marital status?”
“Divorced like me.”
“Guess you can share horror stories.”
Robyn chuckled, “my marriage was a failure but not a horror story. Stop it.”
“Have you spoken to Chris?’
“Not since the divorce was final. Why?”
:Leandra shrugged.
“Le, what happened?”
“Nothing. I thought I saw somebody who looked like him the other day, that’s all.”
“Where? Here? In New York?”
“Yea.”
“Please don’t tell me we moved to the same state.”
“Robs, I don’t know if it was him. I just caught his profile. It could’ve been any cute light skin guy. They are running around here galore.”
“That’s true.”
“So about your new Chris?”
“What about him?”
“What’s the next move?”
“We agreed to talk again but nothing more than that. I’m still stuck in limbo, I’m not trying to make something out of nothing.
“I guess. Are you gonna meet him?”
“Nah. Some things are just better left alone, you know.”
“Not even if you really start to like him.”
“Doesn’t matter. I’m swearing off serious relationships until I fix my broken heart and I have no idea how long that’s gonna take.”
“You still love him, don’t you?”
“I don’t know but I don’t want to.”
“You were together a long time.”
“Yea and he still left me so what does that mean?”
Leandra sighed, “I don’t know. “
“Chris, who are you messaging so much?” Jessica, his sister, asked as she started stirring a pot of beans.
“I met this woman online. We’ve been talking for a few weeks.”
“Online dating? You sure that’s safe?”
“I don’t plan on meeting her so it’s not a huge deal. Just a conversation.”
“Few weeks is a long time for it to just be a conversation. You like her?”
“She seems really nice.”
“Glad you’re opening your heart up somehow.”
“I’m not opening anything up. I went down that road and have no qualms about avoiding it.”
“You know you walked away from your marriage, Chris. I don’t understand your apprehension with moving on.”
“I didn’t walk away to move on. I walked away to keep from hurting her. Two different things. I’m not fit to be in a relationship, let alone a marriage. My daughter is the only woman I’m concerned about right now.”
“Anesa can’t be your whole life.”
“Who says?”
“I wish Momma was here to talk some sense into you.”
“Don’t do that, Jess.”
“What? She was the only person you listened to. Did you ever tell your ex what happened with Momma?”
“No.”
“You never took her to meet her?”
“It’s not like she was around. Auntie C raised me.”
“So when you left every weekend to see Momma in the hospital your ex never asked why?”
“She asked. I never answered.”
“Chris.”
“I don’t want to talk about it. It wasn’t for her to know. She didn’t need that kind of weight on her, ok?”
“You never gave her a chance to really love you, Chris.”
“Well that doesn’t really matter. She moved away and about her life. I did the same. No harm, no foul.”
“I wouldn’t quite say no harm, no foul but whatever.”
“Why are you doing this?”
“I don’t want you to hurt this new woman because you’re still in love with your past, Chris.”
“I’m not in love with anyone so there’s nothing to be worried about.”
“And that worries me even more.”
I wrote a new short story because I can’t make myself sit down and do nothing. 😂😂😂
Sex Excerpt 11: Watching
I’m a voyeur. A watcher. An observer. I get my enjoyment from seeing it happen to others. And God, it does feel good. Men. Women. Whatever beautiful moment can be designed.
This was the first I had ever ventured farther than my computer screen. I mean, it’s not like voyeurism is widely acceptable no matter how much people unconsciously do it.
But she was gorgeous. The darkest of skin. The whitest of teeth. The reddest of hair. She seemed too much of everything but just enough at the same time.
And he was just as gorgeous. Just tall enough. Just dark enough. Just thick enough. He was simply just enough. Like God had a measuring cup so precise, there was no way to make him too much.
I watched them for a while. I don’t know if they saw me watching them but I couldn’t help myself. They were interesting. She giggled. He kissed her. She giggled some more. He grabbed her hip. She giggled even more. He bit her neck. And I saw that giggle change her mouth shape into a moan. Like they had never came to this party but were here, if that makes any sense.
A part of me wanted to take notes but at the same time, my mind was like a camera. No paper trails needed.
His hand trailed her spine. Her backless shirt making it easy to see the ripples of her skin as she moved around in arousal and it was interesting. Watching her squirm drew my attention more than his blatant techniques of arousal as his hand fell into the low V of her shirt and grabbed her breast. It was dark, nobody could really see unless they were looking close enough or cared enough like me.
Her back arched. A show of imperfection as her spine wasn’t perfectly straight. A slight curve shown under her dark skin. Not flaw inducing, just interesting.
She grabbed his face, whispered against it and he smiled the biggest smile then I noticed there was a mirror in front of their faces. He turned around and stared at me. No smile. No frown. Just interesting. He made a gesture to his face like he was putting on a pair of binoculars and I shrugged in response. Clearly he saw me, why lie?
Then he moved his hand to wave me closer and I shook my head vigorously. Personal interaction ruined the moment. When you knew too much, you knew too much and mystery was always more fun. But he nodded, a small nod but a nod nonetheless. Then twisted his hands as if adjusting a pair binoculars. Was he simply offering me a closer look? Did I really need one?
Clearly I did because how I ended up in a chair in the corner of a room while they were spread across the bed, I never really caught a reason for but I was there. And they were there. And then they were THERE.
It was sensual and awkward and interesting. Because the mystery was still there even though I knew more than I knew minutes before.
And he was really beautiful. That just dark enough skin had a mocha tint that turned copper in the dimmest of lighting. And it was even. Just coppery brown everywhere from his feet to the root follicle of his hair. And it was interesting how anyone could be that color and be the even at the same time. Her chest heaved as he hovered over him. Her breasts, the perfect medium size. Too perky for it’s cup but just heavy enough for a grope. And grope he did. Over and over again like a new toy that he was testing. And she breathed. Not moaned but breathed. I had never seen that before. Like foreplay was relaxing instead of invigorating. Ms. Too Much but Enough was becoming even more interesting to me.
As her back arched up from the bed. The heaviness of his dick falling against her leg and finally she made a sound. A soft sound. A soft groan like the coppery snake on her thigh was biting her. Like the pre-cum covering her skin was like venom. I sat up. He was prepared but dragging it out and the unselfishness was devastating. Take her like I thought he would’ve in that party. But he kept moving slow. Slow. Unhurried. Unbothered. Unconcerned.
She just laid there. Her back doing most of the moving. Her voice never louder than a whisper. How I could hear what she was saying was ingenious. Or impossible. Maybe I was just making up her sex talk in my mind but watching him get more powerful. Dick hard enough for him to balance on it like a pogo stick. He rubbed it against her thigh. Against her stomach. Spreading the prequel to his seed all over her skin. It looked wet. More like water with a bit too much salt dissolved in it. A blurry clear more than a creamy white.
Then pushed into her and the most animalistic sound I’ve ever heard came out. So much satisfaction went into that moan. Almost like she was challenging the laws of nature because it was powerful but so soft. So quiet. If you were outside the window, you wouldn’t hear it but being in the corner of the room led to the perfect acoustics.
He pushed. And he pushed. And he pushed. Then she shoved. And she shoved. Then he closed his legs around hers. Held her body in place. His face by her ear. I heard his teeth graze her skin. I heard his moan leave his lips. It’s almost like I heard the orgasm flow from the tip of his dick. Only God could make something that could sound like that. It’s takes purity for that kind of emotion. The Devil would’ve amplified it and made it dirty but it sounded like a wounded angel more than a strong demon. And in the locked position, they moved. Up. Down. Up. Down. Then he stopped but she kept moving. Slowly. Not rushing to an orgasm but pulling one out of him. Then she stopped but he started. He pushed. And he pushed. And he groped then pushed. The muscles of his back strained. His ass clenched. The coppery color blending in one side to the other. And I don’t know why I wanted to leave but perhaps I had seen enough. Maybe I hadn’t seen enough but didn’t want to ruin the happy ending. I’m not sure.
I’m a voyeur. A watcher. An observer. And as creamy cum slid down their dark skin as her pussy overflowed from an orgasm much too slow to be fake, I stood up. I walked to the bed. Swiped my hand across the blurry clear wetness then walked out.
Anonymous asked: Good morning! I hope all is well with you. I know you’re currently writing a Chrianna ff (that I love ❤️ it’s amazing) so when you get a chance I would like to make a request for another throwback short about when Chris’ nudes leaked in 2011 and he sent that tweet “@RIHANNA you got that pic I sent you?” that was supposed to be a DM 😂 They happened four months apart tho so I don’t know if that’ll affect anything. Thank you in advance :)
I’d have to do some research and see if there’s anything I can conjure up for that. No guarantees but thanks for the suggestion
Healthy male friendships are almost as rare in mainstream fiction as gay male relationships, and maybe more rare in fanfiction. Let men be wonderful friends without pushing a romantic relationship, just like men and women should be able to be wonderful friends without the pressure of a romantic relationship.
*AGGRESSIVELY SLAMS REBLOG UNTIL I DIE*
This is literally the reason men are so terrified of being open about loving each other platonically, because they donโ€™t want people to assume theyโ€™re gay just because they can be supportive of their fucking friends
Time Heals….. Chapter Four
timehealsfanfictionbka:
Chris looked around in awe as he pulled into the parking lot of his old high school. Robyn leaned back against the passenger seat and sighed, “not much has changed as you can see.”
“Maybe not to you.”
Robyn shrugged her shoulders, “we can walk around the grounds. They don’t have those cameras like they used to have when we were in school”
“They got rid of them?”
“Yea.”
“Cool.”
They both climbed out and walked around the front of the car. They walked a few feet before Chris stopped in the middle of the practice football field. Robyn, having walked ahead of him, stopped and walked back to Chris, “what’s up?”
“Remember when we were here after school hours?”
“Chris, we were here a lot of times after school hours, you gotta be a bit more specific.”
“Right after graduation.”
“Yea. What about it?”
“What happened?”
“What do you mean?”
“That night me and you, something just started to go wrong. We didn’t talk as much, we didn’t go out as much. What happened?”
“Life happened, Chris and it wasn’t as bad as you make it sound. I saw you every other day, we were making school plans and everything. You decided to go into the military and I guess somewhere in the mix, you met Tiana. Chris, we weren’t gonna be best friends forever like we were in high school”
“I don’t understand why not.”
“Considering what happened after that, I’m surprised you don’t understand why.”
“That had nothing to do with our friendship.”
“It had everything to do with our friendship because it clarified exactly where we stood with each other.”
“Robyn…”
“Chris, it’s the past and I don’t wanna spend more time thinking about it than necessary. I’m over it.”
“You don’t seem like it.”
“Chris…”
“Robyn, we haven’t spent any time together in years but that doesn’t mean I don’t still know you. I know how you are when you’re upset and there’s something you want to say and you aren’t saying it.”
“I really wish it was that simple but it’s not.”
“Why isn’t it?’
“Chris, trust me this is a can of worms you don’t need to open. Is this what you brought me here for? To dig up old shit?”
“No but-”
“So why are we even talking about this? It’s been eight years, I’ve been married and widowed, you’re happily married and life has gone on. I’m over all the selfish shit you did, I’m over our whole past friendship and I’m definitely over this conversation. You wanna be friends again? I can do that but I really have no interest in hashing out old shit.”
Chris held up his hands in surrender, “I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to upset you or offend you. I just don’t want whatever happened in the past to affect any possibility of us being friends in the future.”
“Chris, I said I’m open to being friends. If it’s something that needs to be addressed, I will do so at the appropriate time but as of right now, I’d rather leave it alone.”
“I can respect that.”
“Thank you.”
They both went silent for a few moments. Robyn tucked her hands into her pockets and looked down at the floor. Chris sighed and ran his hand over his head, “Rob-”
Robyn shook her head, “Chris, just don’t.”
Chris nodded his head, “you wanna walk? I think we both need a breather.”
“Lead the way.”
Chris started walking and Robyn trailed behind him.
They walked in silence for a few minutes before stopping in front of the school practice track. Chris stopped beside her and gently nudged her shoulder, “is it ok if I ask you a question?”
“Depends on what it is.”
“Why’d you come here with me?”
“What?”
“Why’d you come here with me?”
“Curiosity to be honest. Trust me, I am well aware that our last encounter didn’t end too well 8 years ago. We never properly said goodbye or ended our friendship so there’s a lot of loose ends. Partly the reason why I’ve been avoiding you lately but it seems as soon as someone says your name, you appear.”
Chris chuckled, “I do have a great sense of timing sometimes.”
“And your mother has a great sense of everything to be honest.”
“Why you say that?”
“Did you ever tell her about me and you?”
“What you mean?”
“She keeps asking me if anything bad happened between us and I keep wondering if she’s a psychic or something.”
“Robyn, nobody knows about that. It wouldn’t be good for either of us if anyone found out.”
“I’m just asking because I feel like she suspects something.”
“My mother is always suspicious. Ever since she decided me and you were supposed to be soulmates she’s been clocking our every move.”
“And when did that happen?”
“Middle school, I think.”
“Are you serious?” Robyn laughed, “And how did she decide that?”
“My mother loves you, almost more than me and she’s always had this little bit of hope that we would end up together. I’m sure you’ve heard that before.”
“A lot more than I would like.”
Without thinking about it, Chris placed his arm around her shoulders and Robyn simply glanced up at him before settling into the embrace. They started walking together, Robyn with her hands still in her pockets, “I mean I understand where she’s coming from because we’ve always been close but that doesn’t always translate into a relationship.”
“That’s very true.”
“I mean look at you and Tiana, there’s a reason y’all worked out. She seems like a nice girl.”
“She is. It was weird at first because we seemed so opposite but I think we’ve realized we’re more alike than we thought.”
“Michael was my polar opposite in every sense of the word but he was open to change so it worked out.”
“How’d you meet him?”
“At school. He used to be a residence assistant on campus.”
“Oh so you’d known him for a while.”
“Kinda, I officially met him at the start of my senior year.”
“Really?”
“We weren’t friends or anything, prior to that we just knew of each other.”
“Oh, why didn’t you mention him?”
“There was nothing to mention. He was a nice guy but I was focused on school. We didn’t even start dating until at least 3 months after I graduated.”
“Oh, that’s cool.”
“You had already gotten married and moved away by then.”
“Oh cool.”
“So how’d you meet Tiana?”
“She was a nursing assistant on the base where I started my basic training.”
“Hmm…so she’s a nurse?”
“She was studying to be a nurse but she withdrew from school when we moved to France.”
“Why didn’t she finish her degree there? I heard college is free overseas.”
“It is but I really can’t answer that question, I’d have to ask her.”
“Oh.”
“So did you stop at Bachelor’s or did you continue your education?”
“I have a Master’s in Finance.”
“Finance? You didn’t take it easy on yourself, did you?”
Robyn laughed, “It was interesting enough and I didn’t want just a general business degree. I’m thinking of going back for one in Business Administration but I’m not sure.”
“That’s great. What makes you not sure?”
“Time. The girls aren’t old enough to be completely self-sufficient and school takes up way too much time.”
“Oh. That’s understandable.”
“What about you?”
“What you mean?”
“You gonna upgrade your degree anytime soon?”
“I don’t know. I think I gotta get more adjusted to working then we’ll see what happens.”
“That’s a good way to handle it. So…how’s the wife adjusting?”
“She’s doing ok. I’m not sure she’s liking it too much though.”
“What you mean?”
“I don’t think she likes Houston too much.”
“Did you meet her in Houston?”
“No. I mean she’s been here to visit when we were dating but she’s never lived here or anything.”
“So where’s she from?”
“She was born in California, raised in Michigan.”
“So where did you actually meet her?”
“Remember when I left that summer for like 2 months?”
“Not really.”
Chris frowned and Robyn shrugged her shoulders, “Anyway, I went to Fort Jackson in South Carolina for basic training and she had just started working there.”
“No matter where you go, you always find a girlfriend.”
Chris laughed, “that was not my intention.”
“You were and have always been girl crazy, you used to have them by the dozens and you know it.”
“You make me sound like some kind of ho.”
Robyn twisted up her lips, “you said it, not me.”
Chris squeezed her tightly and Robyn giggled, “Don’t get mad at me, I just call it like I see it.”
“Anyway, I had sprained my ankle playing football with some of the guys and ended up going to the infirmary and there she was.”
“And you flirted with her, got her number and you sweet-talked her out of her draws a few weeks later.”
Chris raised his brow, “how’d you-”
“We may not have been around each other in so long but I still know you and I knew you all too well back then.”
Chris chuckled and nodded his head in agreement, “so how’d Michael get the Ice Queen’s number?”
Robyn poked him, “I told you about calling me that but anyway, I called him, and he didn’t call me.”
“Really?”
“He was my tutor, he had graduated already and came back to work at the school and he was really good at math so we linked for study purposes. After I graduated with my Bachelor’s, he asked me out for dinner and it kinda went from there.”
“If you don’t mind me asking, how did he pass?”
“Inoperable tumor. He apparently had it for years before he met me, went through a lot of radiation and chemo but it didn’t help as much as he hoped. About 4 months into us dating, he told me and I went to his last doctor’s appointment where he requested they stop the treatment. Doctors gave him a 15-month timeline, he went to hospice for about 3 months before he passed away.”
“So you were only married a year then.”
“Yup. He passed about a month after our 1 year anniversary.”
“Wow. I’m so sorry.”
“It’s ok. It wasn’t sudden or anything so I coped with it pretty well. He was awesome with the preparation so I’m glad for that.”
“That’s always a good thing. Are you close to his family?”
“His mother and grandmother, yes. Everyone else? Not really.”
“Oh that’s too bad.”
“It’s fine with me. I am not gonna force them to like me, as long as they treat my children with respect, I am fine with that.”
“Well that is most important.”
“So you really waiting to have children?”
“Actually no, that’s just something we came up with to pacify my mom.”
“What you mean?”
“Tiana doesn’t want any kids.”
“What?”
“She doesn’t want kids.”
“You, the one person I know who everybody’s children loves, plan on not having kids.”
Chris shrugged his shoulders, “I can’t make her do something she doesn’t want to do, it’s her body.”
“But you’re her husband, y’all can’t come to some sort of compromise?”
“I’ve tried but when I was active duty, I didn’t think it would be fair to stick her alone with a child then once I got injured and discharged, we talked about it and her mind didn’t change. I got baby cousins and stuff to occupy me.”
“That’s really unfair to you.”
“It is what it is. Hey, if we become friends again, I’ll just spoil your daughters.”
“As if your mother isn’t bad enough.”
“She’s always had a soft spot for you, you know that.”
“I think she just loves kids.”
“And you. I got many other friends with children, she doesn’t dote on them on the same. You’d think they were her grandchildren.”
Chris laughed but Robyn’s body tensed up a bit.
“You ok?” Chris asked softly.
“I’m fine. I feel a little cold, you mind if we go back to the car?”
“Oh sure.”
Chris hugged her to him tightly and rubbed her arm, “feel a little better?”
Robyn smiled up at him, “Yea, thanks.”
                                                   ~~~~~~

“Tiana, did you want anything to drink?” Joyce called from the kitchen.

“No thank you Mama J, I’m fine.”

“Oh ok. You and Chris staying for dinner?”

“We could. I’m still trying to get the house to my liking.”

“How’s it going?” Joyce asked as she came to sit next to Tiana on the couch.

“It’s ok. I miss Paris a lot though.”

“You were there for a long time, it’s definitely a home for you.”

“Yea, I think I just need to get used to Texas.”

“It’ll take time. If it wasn’t for Robyn when we moved here from Virginia, I doubt Chris would’ve adjusted so well.”

“How long have they known each other?”

“Since the 4th grade. They met in school and I guess with both of our families being new here, they bonded over that.”

“That’s awesome.”

“Yea, too bad they stopped talking for so long.”

“I wonder why.”

“Nobody knows. Chris says they grew apart. Personally I think he did something stupid and made her mad, it’s happened before.”

Tiana chuckled, “He does have a way of getting under your skin.”

“That’s my son for you, then turn around and charm his way right back into your good graces.”

“Tell me about it.”

Tiana started to speak just as the front door swung open and two giggling girls came running in. Joyce stood up and met them right at the foyer and they ran into her arms, “Hi my babies.”

“Hi Mama J,” the girls said simultaneously.

“Sorry Mama J. They were just so excited to see you, they have something to show you,” Robyn said as she walked in the door behind her daughters.

“It’s fine. They didn’t hurt anything but I would love to see what they’re so excited about.”

Erin and Erica both dug into their book bags and pulled out laminated certificates, “We got best dance duo in our class today!”

“That’s so great! I’m so proud of you!”

Joyce knelt down to hug and kiss them, “I think this deserves your favorite red velvet cupcakes, you wanna help me make them?”

Erin and Erica turned to Robyn with a pout, “Can we, Mommy?”

“Well…we were supposed to be going out to dinner but if you want, we can stay for a little bit so you can make your cupcakes.”

“Yay!”

“Go wash your hands and change into your other clothes first, ok?”

“Yes Mommy.”

The girls took off running to the guest room as Joyce stood up, “Robyn, where’s Chris?”

“Sitting in his car on the phone.”

“So he took you to get the girls from class?”

“Yea, when we left from seeing Micah it was time for me to pick them up and I wouldn’t have had enough time to come here and get my car without being late .”

“True. How is Micah?”

“Dodging child support from 3 baby mamas.”

Joyce shook her head, “The boy never listened. I told him about that foolishness back when y’all were in high school.”

“I know. Glad I dodged that bullet.”

“That’s cause Chris saved you.”

“What you mean?”

“He never told you about him talking to Micah before he ever introduced y’all?”

“Uh no.”

“Oh. I guess that was supposed to be a secret.”

Robyn shook her head, “I don’t even know why I’m surprised. That is your son.”

“What about her son?”

They both turned around at the sound of Chris’s voice. Joyce smirked and left back towards the living room. Chris stopped next to Robyn, “what was that about?”

“You warned Micah about me?”

Chris feigned shock, “What? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Don’t lie to me, Christopher.”

“See what had happened was…”

“Bye Christopher.”

Robyn rolled her eyes and walked off into the living room with Chris trailing behind her laughing. He playfully grabbed her into a hug and rubbed her hair, “so you not gonna let me explain.”

“Not if you gonna lie to me again.”

“But-”

“Hey Babe.”

Chris looked to his side and smiled when he saw Tiana sitting on the couch, “Hey Baby Girl, I thought you were at the house.”

“I came by to see your mom for a few minutes. How was your day?”

“It was good. Robyn took me around to see some old friends.”

Robyn waved at Tiana then carefully withdrew herself from Chris’s arms, “Hi.”

“Hey,” Tiana replied.

“I’m gonna go check on the girls.”

“Are those your children?”

“Yea, Erin and Erica.”

“They’re adorable. How old are they?”

“7.”

“Twins?”

“Identical.”

“That’s awesome. They’re beautiful.”

“Thanks.”

Robyn smiled and left towards the guest room leaving Tiana and Chris alone.

“What was that about?” Tiana asked. Chris frowned as he sat down on the couch, “what you mean?’

“The hugging and stuff. She barely spoke to you the last time we saw her and now y’all hugging.”

“We talked and decided to be friends again. We were just playing around.”

“Oh ok.”

“You must be feeling better, you’ve barely left the house since we got here.”

“I figured I should do something since we’re gonna be here for a while.”

Chris sighed, “we gonna have another discussion about this again?”

“No. I still don’t understand why we had to come here and not somewhere else.”

“I wanted to be closer to my family, we went over this in Paris.”

“I know but- whatever.”

“T, can you try and get used to it? Give it a year or so, please.”

“Ok, ok.”

Chris hugged her and leaned down to kiss her lips. Tiana smiled and settled her hand in his lap, “your mom invited us for dinner, you wanna stay?”

“I don’t mind unless you don’t want to.”

“It’s fine with me.”

“Ok.”

Robyn quietly walked past with the twins into the kitchen to not disturb the moment between Chris and Tiana. Joyce smiled as she saw the girls, who ran over to the island to stand on either side of her. Robyn sat down on island stool and started scrolling through her phone.

“Angel, you staying for dinner?”

Robyn looked up and shook her head, “no, I need to get the girls back home.”

“Ok, I’ll make y’all some to go plates.”

“Thanks Mama J.”

“So…how was your day with Chris?”

Robyn raised her brow at Joyce, who laughed, “it was fine.”

“Did you talk?”

“A little bit.”

“And?”

“And what? We talked, I told him I don’t wanna rehash old situations and we decided to move forward and be friends. Nothing serious.”

“Well that’s good. I’m glad y’all talked.”

“Y’all gonna be awhile with the cupcakes?”

“Probably.”

“Ok, I’m gonna head to the store real quick, I need to get the girls some stuff. Just let me know when you’re ready.”

“You alright?”

“I’m good. See you in a little bit.”

Robyn walked over and kissed the twins, “Have fun with Mama J and be good.”

“Yes, Mommy,” they replied simultaneously.

Robyn left.

A few minutes passed and Chris and Tiana walked into the kitchen.

“Where’s Robyn?” Chris asked.

“She went to get the girls some things from the store while they make cupcakes with me.”

“Oh ok.”

“Bitch, where you disappear to? We haven’t heard from you in days,” A voice exclaimed from Robyn’s phone. She sighed and shook her head, “Leandra, relax. I’ve just been busy.”

“Busy doing what? Chris is married, so you ain’t doing him.”

Robyn’s mouth dropped open in shock as Leandra laughed, “I fucking hate you.”

“What? You know you wanna ride that dick again, once was not enough.”

“Who are you around?”

“Nobody. Why?”

“Nobody knows about that incident except you and Melissa.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes seriously.”

“Not even his wife.”

“Definitely not his fucking wife, are you kidding me? Can you imagine that situation?”

“Robyn, it was 8 years ago, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal.”

“Probably not if it wasn’t on the night before his wedding,” Robyn murmured.

It got completely silent and Robyn watched as Leandra’s eyes widened, “you heard that?”

“Fuck yes! You fucked him the night before his wedding! Bitch!!!!”

“Lele, stop screaming, somebody is gonna hear you.”

“Girl, I thought it was some random ass day and y’all just happened to fuck but the night before his wedding? This is some hot ass tea. How the fuck did that happen?”

“We got drunk, started talking about old shit and one thing led to another.”

“Robs, how does that even happen?”

“You know me and Chris have always been close. Sleeping in the same bed and all that other shit. It’s something we’ve addressed before in a roundabout way but I guess it just came out at that time. It’s crazy, I know.”

“Do you have feelings for each other?”

“Now, I don’t know. We did then. We talked about it before this ever happened and decided to just be friends. Being drunk didn’t help that night.”

Leandra laughed, “So how do you feel now that he’s home?”

“Fucking pissed. Like everything just fell apart after that night. I don’t know if I’m more mad at him or myself.”

“I know that feeling all too well. Have y’all discussed it?”

“I really don’t know if I want to. Like what exactly do I say without sounding bitter or like I want to be with him besides he’s married, this will affect more than just our friendship.”

“That is true. I mean it’s gonna come out eventually.”

“It doesn’t have to though.”

“Robyn, things like this always come to the light whether we want them to or not, someone is gonna find out.”

Robyn sighed and ran her hand through her hair, “I don’t need anymore drama in my life.”

“I’m just saying. So how’s it going with Michael’s family?”

“Same as always.”

“They still upset about the marriage and the will?”

“Of course they are. Well mainly it’s just his sister. She’s such a bitch.”

“I keep telling you to let me whip her ass.”

“That is the girls’ aunt.”

“Not biologically or legally.”

“Leandra.”

“I’m so tired of hearing about her doing some scandalous shit to aggravate you or my nieces. It’s ridiculous. Shit, I’m surprised she hasn’t told the girls Michael isn’t their biological father.”

“The bitch better not, I’ll fuck her up myself.”

“Are you ever gonna tell them?”

“When they’re older, yea but I don’t know how I’m gonna deal with the aftermath of everything. I mean, they’re gonna ask who their real father is.”

“Do you know?”

“Of course I know.”

“Who is it?”

“I’m not telling you.”

“Really Robs?”

“Leandra, it’s just something I don’t want to remember or even think about.”

“Were you raped or something?”

“No, it was a one night stand. I fucked up and I just don’t want to think about it. They’re here, I love them and that’s all that matters.”

“Let’s just be glad they look like you then.”

“Let’s be very glad.”

“Is it someone we know?”

“No Leandra.”

“Sorry. Sorry. I’ma leave it alone. What you up to?”

“Sitting in my car in the mall parking lot.”

“Why?”

“Chris and his wife are at Mama J’s house and I didn’t wanna be there.”

“Are y’all still not talking?”

“We actually spent the whole day together. I don’t really know his wife so it’s awkward.”

“The whole day?”

“He wanted to see where we grew up so I showed him the high school and everything.”

“Did he try to talk about the past?”

“He did but I shut it down. I’m not ready for all of that.”

“Clearly. So how long you gonna sit in the car?”

“Maybe another hour or so. The girls are making cupcakes with Mama J so I wanna give them enough time to do that before I take them home.”

“Oh ok. You coming for Crop Over?”

“Yes, we are coming for Crop Over.”

“Are you participating?”

“I’m thinking about it.”

“Oh ok. Well I gotta get back to work, we need to talk tonight though.”

“Why?”

“So I can tag in Mel, you cannot spill tea like that and think I’m just gonna let it go. I wanna know everything.”

Robyn groaned, “Seriously?”

“Yes seriously. Next time, learn how to talk lower.”

Robyn laughed, “Bye Lele.”

“Later.”

They hung up. Robyn sighed as she stretched her arms above her head before grabbing her wireless beats and her phone then got out of the car. Just as she connected her Bluetooth to her phone, it rang.

Chris sat down on his mother’s porch with his phone to his ear. The phone rang for a few moments before she picked up, “Yes Christopher.”

“Hey, you ok?”

“I’m good. Why you asking?”

“You left kind of suddenly, I just wanted to make sure you were good.”

“I’m fine.”

“Did I do something?”

“What? No. It was just really awkward in the house, it felt crowded, that’s all.”

“Awkward? Why?”

“I saw that look your wife gave you when you were hugging me.”

“Oh that was nothing. She was just thrown off since we didn’t really speak the last time we saw each other then she sees us hugging, that’s all.”

“Hmm…does she know you called me?”

“Yea, she knows.”

“Oh ok.”

“Which store did you go to?”

“I’m at the mall, figured I’d give the girls some time to hang with Mama J before taking them home. We don’t come this way too often. Are they ok?”

“They’re good. Very smart little girls. You did a great job.”

“Aww…thanks. Maybe you can work your irritating charm and get your wife to change her mind.”

“I doubt it. Well I’ll let you get back to what you doing, just wanted to make sure you were ok.”

“Thanks for the concern but I’m good.”

“Hey, you free anytime this weekend?”

“Saturday afternoon, why?”

“I was thinking about having a luncheon or something, get Tiana acquainted with some of the people I know. It’s hard for her to get used to a new place and all her friends are back in Paris.”

“Umm…just let me know what time and I may be able to stop by for an hour or so.”

“Ok cool. I’ll let you know. Thanks.”

“No problem. Later Christopher.”

“Bye Robyn.”

They hung up. Chris walked back inside the house and sat down at the island with the twins after grabbing a bottle of water out of the fridge.  Erin smiled up at him while Erica concentrated on making the right color of red frosting for the cupcakes. “Mr. Chris?” Erin asked.

“Yes Erin?”

“How long have you known my mommy?”

“Since I was about your age.”

“Really?”

“Yup.”

“She was your best friend?”

“Yup. She still is.”

“That’s cool.”

“Do you have a best friend?”

“My sister is my best friend.”

“Now that’s cool.”

“Yea, we hang out all the time. Sometimes she can be a meanie but it’s ok.”

Chris chuckled as Erica looked over at her sister at that exact moment, “I am not a meanie. You just like to bother me during my quiet time.”

“Because you’re my best friend, you’re supposed to hang out with me all the time.”

“Well Erin, you have to be respectful of people’s space. Just because your sister wants time by herself doesn’t mean she’s no longer your best friend. Sometimes you gotta have time to do all your favorite things that other people may not like to do, “Chris interjected.

“Oh like Erica likes to read more but I like to draw more.”

“Exactly. There’s nothing wrong with being by yourself sometimes.

“You think that’s why my mommy doesn’t have a boyfriend?”

Chris choked on the water he had just drunk. Grabbing a napkin, he coughed into it and set the bottle of water back on the table, “Erin, I don’t think that’s the same thing.”

Erin shrugged her shoulders, “Oh ok.”

“Besides that’s something your mommy would have to explain but it’s not appropriate or polite for you to ask something like that. Promise me you won’t say anything else like that especially to your mommy?”

“I promise, Mr. Chris.”

“Thank you.”

“Mr. Chris, do you have a nickname?”

Chris shook his head, “Not really. I guess you could say Chris is my nickname since my full name is actually Christopher.”

“Oh ok.”

“Do you have a nickname?”

“Not really. They said my dad used to call us Double Trouble.”

“That’s cute.”

“My dad was really nice. He died a long time ago though.”

“Aww…I’m sorry to hear that but at least you got to know him.”

“I miss him sometimes.”

“That’s normal. Do you talk about him alot?”

“When we go to Mama Lisa’s house, we do but not with my mommy. I think it makes her sad.”

“You think so? So what do you do when she feels sad?”

“Me and Erica climb in her lap and we tickle her. She laughs really loud then we go get ice cream.”

“That’s really sweet of y’all. You know if I ever have a daughter, I’d want her to be just like you.”

“Of course, we’re awesome.”

Chris burst out in loud laughter, “Yes, y’all are awesome.”

“Can I hug you, Mr. Chris?”

“Of course you can, Erin.”

Chris opened his arms and hugged the little girl tightly before tickling her belly causing her to giggle.

“Chris, you better not be distracting them,” Joyce called out as she walked into the kitchen. Chris gave his mother a look and she laughed, “I was just talking to them while we wait for the cupcakes.”

“Mama J, I think I’m finished,” Erica said.

Joyce looked over into the bowl and raised her hand to give Erica a high hand, “that is perfect, Sweetie. Why don’t you and your sister get cleaned up and we’ll play outside until the cupcakes are finished and cooled?”

“Ok.”

Chris set Erin down and watched as her and Erica ran out the kitchen. Joyce smiled as she watched his expression, “Thinking about having some?”

“It’s always been a thought but we’ll see what happens. They’re really great kids.”

“Yea, Robyn did really well with them but I didn’t expect anything different.”

“Ma, what you think about throwing a luncheon for Tiana? I want to try and get more acquainted with my friends so she doesn’t feel so lonely.”

“That’s a great idea. You gonna have to start reconnecting with some people though and that takes time.”

“I was gonna have Robyn help me out.”

“You jumping into this friendship thing headfirst, huh?”

“What you mean?”

“It’s almost like you never stopped talking.”

“Nah, it could never be like that. I wish though.”

“What’s making it difficult?”

“Just a lot of stuff I think we need to talk about that she wants to leave buried in the past.”

“Stuff like what?”

“Like private stuff, Ma,” Chris said with a chuckle, “if she won’t even talk about it with me, I doubt she’d want me to tell you.”

“I guess. You just have to give her some time probably.”

“Probably.”

Time Heals…..Chapter Two

timehealsfanfictionbka:

“Erica, where’s your leotard?” Robyn asked as she started packing the girls’ gym bags. Erica shrugged her shoulders, “I can’t find it.”

“Why not?”

“I put it in my room and I can’t find it.”

Robyn groaned, “go into my room and get that Artful Dancewear bag, there should be a new black one in there. It’s supposed to be for your recital so don’t mess it up and take it off as soon as you get home, ok?”

“Yes Mommy.”

Erica ran from the living room just as her sister walked in.

“Mommy, why can’t we go to the party with you?” Erin asked as she plopped down on the couch.

“Because it’s an adult party.”

“But we wanna meet your friends too, Mommy.”

Robyn chuckled, “Trust me Sweetheart, you’ll meet everyone at another time but this is for grown-ups only.”

Erin groaned, “Ok, I guess.”

“Don’t be so sad, there’s a time for everything. Did you put everything you need in your bag?”

“Yes.”

“I’m about to close it up and put it in the car, are you sure?”

“Yes Mommy.”

“Ok. Go get your jacket and tell your sister to hurry up.”

Erin jumped down off the couch and ran to the back of the house to do as instructed.

Robyn didn’t know why she felt so nervous. These were people she’s known almost all her life, at least Chris’s side of the family. She wasn’t too acquainted with his wife but Chris and her tended to keep their friendship separate from any relationships they each had. She had met her a few times but that was it. She brushed off the front of her dress before walking through the entrance of the banquet hall. Stepping to the side, she waved at the few people she knew as she inwardly gawked at the amount of people that were here. She hadn’t been in Houston for more than few hours since Chris’s wedding so most of these people she hadn’t seen in years. She texted Mama J as soon as she parked so hopefully the woman was on her way to collect her. A few more minutes passed when someone bumped her just as she looked down at her phone.

“Excuse me,” the voice said. She felt a familiar tingle down on her spine and took a deep breath to compose herself before looking up. His face widened in shock as she attempted not to freak out.

“Robyn?”

“Hi Christopher.”

Chris couldn’t believe the woman standing in front of him was his best friend, well former. 8 years since they took a final stare at each other across the hall where his wedding was being held and she disappeared for him to never see her again. Not that he could exactly blame her but the reason was neither here nor there. He didn’t think she’d come to the party after everything that happened between them but here she was.

Robyn started to fidget with her black clutch as her and Chris continued staring at each other. This was starting to get awkward.

“Well how are you?” she asked softly.

“I’m good. I’m surprised you made it.”

“Yea, I had to move a few things around but it wasn’t too bad.”

“So you back here for good or?”

“No, I still live in Dallas. I had some regular appointments this way so I figured since I was already over here why not come?”

“That’s great. How’s your-” Chris was interrupted as he felt a tug on his arm. He turned to see his wife wrapping her arm around his, “Oh hey Babe.”

“Hey,” Tiana replied with a smile, “I thought you were inside already.”

“I was going but I ran into the Robyn on my way in. T, you remember Robyn?”

Tiana nodded her head, “I do. Hello Robyn.”

“Hi,” Robyn replied.

“Love the outfit. Glad you could make it out.”

“Thanks. Me too. Welcome back.”

“Thank you. I didn’t think I’d be so excited to be here after being in Paris for so long but this is good.”

“That’s great. Well I’m gonna see if I can find Mama J before everything gets underway.”

“Ok. Nice seeing you.”

“Nice seeing you too.”

Robyn left inside the banquet hall, unsure of where she was going but she knew she needed to get away from them. It was a lot of unresolved things with Chris that she didn’t want to reappear. Now wasn’t the time or the place.

Tiana looked over to Chris with a confused expression, “is she ok?”

“I think so. From what Mama says, she hasn’t been this way in 8 years so maybe it’s just overwhelming for her.”

“Oh. That’s understandable. Have you spoken to her recently?”

“We haven’t had contact since the wedding.”

“Really? But I thought y’all were best friends since kids.”

“We were but life happens, you know? We were moving in different directions and grew apart I guess.”

“Oh, that’s too bad. I always thought she was so nice.”

“Yea. So you ready to go?”

“Yup.”

Chris kissed Tiana’s cheek and they left inside the room.

Chris couldn’t help but to watch Robyn as she wandered around the room. He hadn’t seen her in so long, he just couldn’t wrap his mind around it. She was gorgeous as she always was but there was something else about her. Almost mother-like but as far as he knew she didn’t have any children. He saw his mother and waved her over to him. Joyce came over and Chris wrapped his arm around her shoulder, “Hi Sweetheart.”

“Hey Mama, how are you?”

“Good. Why you standing over here by yourself?”

“Just people watching. Can I ask you a quick question?”

“Sure.”

“Does Robyn have any children?”

“Why don’t you ask her?”

“I don’t wanna seem nosy.”

“But you are being nosy.”

Chris glared over at his mother and Joyce laughed, “Mama….”

“Have you spoken to her yet?”

“I mean we said hello or whatever but I haven’t really had a full conversation with her.”

“You should.”

“Mama, I don’t know it’s awkward.”

“It doesn’t have to be unless something happened between y’all that nobody knows about.”

“What? No. We just haven’t spoken in so long.”

“Oh ok.”

Chris took a sip of his drink and noticed Robyn making her way over to them. She smiled at him then turned to hug Joyce, “Alright Mama J, I gotta get going.”

“So soon?”

“Yea. It’s getting late and I got some more appointments tomorrow.”

“Ok. Let the girls know that I’ll send them some cupcakes next week.”

“Mama J, you’re spoiling them.”

“I am not. They deserve the cupcakes.”

Robyn chuckled, “Ok, I’m not gonna argue with you.”

“Good because you can’t win anyway. I made them some to go plates so you don’t have to cook or buy them anything. I let Christine use your spare key and put them in your car.”

“Thanks Mama J. I’ll see you later.”

“Alright Sweetie.”

They hugged again before Robyn turned to Chris, “Chris, it was nice seeing you. Maybe if you’re on my side of town we’ll see each other again.”

“Definitely. Have a good one.”

“You too.”

Robyn smiled and left with a wave.

Chris turned to Joyce, who took a sip of her drink, “who are you making cupcakes for?”

“That is none of your business.”

“You out here playing fairy grandmother as usual?”

“They’re really close people to Robyn so I’ve taken a liking to them, that’s all.”

“How old are they?”

“Ask Robyn.”

“Mama, why are you doing this to me?”

“I’m not doing anything. If you wanna know about Robyn, ask Robyn.”

Chris rolled his eyes, “I’m going to find Tiana. I’ll talk to you later.”

He kissed Joyce’s cheek then walked off.

“Hey Mommy,” Robyn said into the phone as she plopped down on her bed. She smiled as her mother replied, “Hi Anna. How are you?”

“I’m ok. I’ve been better,”

“Really? What’s the matter?”

“Chris is back in town.”

“Really? Since when?”

“He just came back a few days ago, Mama J and Christine threw him this big party in Houston.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“I didn’t even know until a few days before when Mama J called me. Y’all wouldn’t have been able to fly in that quick.”

“Well we could’ve sent him some gifts. So how is he?”

“Good as far as I can tell.”

“Still married?”

“Yup.”

“You know me and Joyce always thought you two would’ve gotten together.”

“Why?”

“Because y’all were always so close. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Robyn scoffed as she murmured to herself, “you have no idea.”

“Have you spoken to him since he left?”

“Nope.”

“Since he came back?”

“Nope.”

“Why not? We used to couldn’t keep you two apart and now you don’t even talk to each other.”

“Mama, we grew apart. It is what it is.”

“I guess. How’re my grandbabies?”

“They’re fine. I finally found out the date of their recital.”

“When is it so I can schedule the flight?”

“It’s on the 20th at 2pm.”

“Ok, we’ll probably fly in on the 15th or so.”

“How many of y’all are coming? So I know if I might have to reserve a room or two at a hotel.”

“Just me, your dad and your brothers. Maybe Marcel and your cousins if they are able to get away.”

“Well when you get a definite head count, let me know.”

“I always do. So how is Joyce and everyone?”

“Good. She’s spoiling the girls for you.”

Monica chuckled, “I mean I can only do so much from a distance.”

“Well she’s picking up where you left off most definitely.”

“I miss my Twins. I can’t wait to see them.”

“I’m sure they feel the same. I might bring them to Barbados for summer break instead of them going to summer camp this year.”

“Good. They should see where their mommy grew up.”

“I show them pictures all the time, they always talk about playing in the sand and stuff so I’m sure they’ll enjoy it.”

“Are you coming in time for Crop Over?”

“Hmm…I’ll see if I can get the time off but we should be there for Crop Over. They don’t start school until late August anyway.”

“Oh ok. Great. Well Anna, I need to get back to cooking.”

“Save me some.”

“I’ll make sure and cook when we get back to Dallas.”

“Ok Mommy. Talk to you later.”

“Ok. Love you Anna.”

“Love you too.”

They hung up.

Chris groaned as Joyce handed him yet another box to take to her car, “Mama, why are you packing all this stuff?”

“Some of it has to go into storage and the rest I’m taking to Robyn.”

“You’re going to see Robyn?”

“Yea and you’re coming with me.”

“What? Mama, I have to get back to the house.”

“For what? Tiana is at my house. You don’t have any kids, there’s nothing really important for you to do at home.”

“Mama, why are you trying to get me and Robyn to talk so bad?”

“Because she’s around here a lot and I don’t want any tension when y’all are around each other.”

“There isn’t any tension now.”

“Ok Christopher. Doesn’t matter what you say, you’re going with me to Robyn’s house. I can’t move all this stuff by myself anyway.”

Chris sighed and started moving the boxes into the trunk of Joyce’s car.

“Erin! Erica! It’s time to eat,”

Robyn set two plates of food on the table just as she heard the sound of running footsteps. Her daughters rushed into their seats and was about to touch their food when Robyn cleared her throat, “did you forget something?”

Erin and Erica looked at each other then replied at the same time, “Oh! Sorry Mommy!”

They went to the sink and washed their hands before sitting back at the table.

“Mommy, is Mama Lisa gonna come over?” Erica asked.

“I don’t know. She may be busy but y’all spoke to her yesterday, did you ask her?”

“No, I forgot until just now.”

Robyn chuckled, “when you speak to her next week, you can ask her about coming over. You know you could always go to her house.”

Erin shook her head, “No. April and Josie are mean and they like to pull our hair. I don’t like them.”

“Did you tell Mama Lisa that?”

“I tried but I got scared.”

“Sweetie, you should never let anyone bully or be mean to you. You have to stand up for yourself and tell an adult when it happens, ok?”

“Ok”

“I’ll speak to Mama Lisa for you this time but next time you need to let her know yourself, ok?”

“Yes Mommy.”

“So what do you want to do today?”

“Can we play with our paint sets?”

“Sure. I can set them up on the porch for you.”

“Ok. Mommy?”

“Yes Erin?”

“Why do we always have to paint outside?”

“I don’t want you to breathe in the fumes too much and I don’t want you to get paint all over the house. You can make as big of a mess on the porch as you want.”

“Oh but we can be careful.”

“I know you can but it’s just in case, that’s all.”

“Ok Mommy.”

“I’m gonna go set up the paint sets, you can come outside once you finish eating, ok?”

“Ok,” they replied simultaneously.

Robyn left them to finish their lunch and left onto the screened in front porch.

As she was moving around the furniture, she saw a car pulling into her driveway. She stepped outside the screen door and smiled when she noticed it was Joyce’s car. As it parked and the driver door swung open, she started to wave but her hand fell when she noticed it was Chris climbing out. Her smile turned into a confused frown as she noticed Joyce climb out of the passenger side. She carefully descended her steps until she was standing at the top of her driveway. Joyce waved at her and she waved back but her facial expression never changed. What the hell was Chris doing here?

Chris immediately noticed Robyn’s contempt of his presence and cursed underneath his breath. He told his mother he didn’t want to come. He carefully walked to the front of the car and stopped a few feet away from Robyn, tucking his hands into his pockets. He smiled hesitantly and she gave him a soft smile back. Joyce walked over to Robyn and hugged her tightly, “Hi Angel.”

“Hey Mama J, what are you doing here?”

“I finally cleaned that basement out and brought over the stuff you wanted.”

“Oh Ok. So why is Chris here?”

“To help me move this stuff.”

“Mama J, I could’ve helped you.”

“I know but he was already with me moving the stuff into storage so I just brought him along.”

“Ok, I guess.”

“Well go be polite and say hi. Where’s my babies?”

“Getting their lunch in the kitchen.”

“Good, then I can give them their cupcakes.”

“Mama J….”

“You said you weren’t gonna argue with me, so don’t.”

“Yes Ma’am.”

“Show Chris where to put everything, I already told him he’d be playing moving man today.”

Robyn chuckled as she hugged Joyce again, “Yes Ma’am.”

Joyce left inside the house and Robyn turned towards Chris. He stood up to his full height as she walked over to the car.

“Hi,” Chris said lowly.

“Hey. How are you?”

“I’m good. How are you?”

“I’m alright. How you enjoying being back here?”

“It’s good. I didn’t think it’d miss Texas as much but I kind of did.”

“I wouldn’t know that feeling.”

Chris chuckled and ran one of his hands over his head, “so where would you like me put everything?”

“I need to see what all she brought me. I think she put extra stuff in there, not like I need anything else in my house.”

“That’s cool.”

Chris used the remote key to pop open the trunk as they walked around to the back of the car. Robyn casually looked through the two large boxes and nodded her head in approval, “this is what I asked her for. Just follow me into my garage and I’ll show you where to put everything.”

“Ok. Right behind you.”

Chris grabbed the heavier of the two boxes and followed behind Robyn to her garage. She shoved over a small collection of cleaning rags to make a space for Chris to set the box down. She moved aside as he stood back up and Chris glanced around the sparsely covered space to see two large portraits of two little girls or just one little girl, they looked so similar.

“Are those your daughters or daughter?”

Robyn nodded her head, “It’s daughters. They’re identical twins.”

“Really? How old are they?”

“They just turned 7 in January.”

“Oh, that’s great. Mama never told me you had children.”

“I doubt you ever asked.”

“I did once I found out y’all were still speaking but she told me to ask you but I didn’t really know how without seeming too nosy.”

Robyn nodded her head, “Understandable. Did you have any kids?”

“No. Tiana didn’t want to have any while I was still active duty.”

“Oh ok.”

“You live alone?”

“Yea. My husband died a year after the twins were born.”

“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. At least they got to spend time with their father.”

A shadow came over Robyn’s face for a moment before smiling, “It’s ok.”

“So you didn’t get married/date again after he passed?”

“Nah, I wasn’t really interested in the whole relationship thing after I had the girls but we do alright on our own.”

“Oh that’s good. Do you still speak to his family?”

“Occasionally. The girls see them every once in awhile.”

“Oh that’s great.”

“So since you’re no longer active, you planning on having children?”

“I don’t know. We haven’t really talked about it. I’m sure my mother would love some grandchildren especially from the way she spoils your daughters.”

“That’s true.”

“How’s your family by the way?”

“They’re great. I’m taking the girls to Barbados in the summer before school starts back up.”

“That should be fun.”

“Yea.”

Robyn glanced around the room as an awkward silence came over them, “So you thirsty?”

“I could go for some water.”

“Ok. Follow me.”

Robyn led him into the house and went to the kitchen where the Twins were still sitting with Joyce. She gestured for Chris to have a seat while she went to get him some water. Erin and Erica looked at each other before turning their attention to Chris. Robyn handed Chris a glass of water then sat down at the table. She raised her brow at Erin and Erica, who shrugged their shoulders, “Girls, didn’t I tell you about staring at people?”

Erica pouted, “Sorry Mommy but we’ve never seen him before.”

“Then you should say hello like I’ve told you before.”

Erin smiled, “Hi I’m Erin.”

Chris smiled, “Hi Erin, I’m Chris. I’m Mama Joyce’s son.”

“Oh I saw pictures of you before. Mama Joyce has you all over her house.”

Chris chuckled, “Really?”

“Yup. Mama Joyce showed us your room and you had a bunch of pictures with my mommy.”

“Well me and your mommy grew up together, we were best friends.”

“Really? I didn’t know that.”

“Yea.”

“Have you ever lived here?”

“Where? Texas?”

“Yes.”

“I used to live here but I got married and me and my wife moved away.”

“Did you move somewhere fun?”

“Yup. We moved to Paris.”

Erin frowned, “I don’t know where that is.”

“It’s all the way on the other side of the Earth. You ever heard of the Eiffel Tower?”

Erin nodded her head, “uh huh.”

“Paris is where the Eiffel tower is.”

“Oh. Did you go there?”

“Yea. I used to pass it all the time.”

“Really? That’s so cool.”

“Yea, it is, “ Chris smiled and turned to Erica, “and what’s your name?”

“I’m Erica.”

“Well Hi Erica. How are you?”

“Good.”

“Mr. Chris, can I ask you something?”

“Sure you can.”

“Do you have any kids?”

“No Sweetheart, I don’t.”

Erica frowned, “Oh. Do you want any?”

“I do but maybe in a little while, me and my wife will have some kids.”

“Can they be our friends?”

“Of course, I don’t see why not.”

Joyce smiled as she saw Chris and the Twins getting acquainted. Chris had always been really good with children. Joyce glanced at Robyn and her face was very unreadable, almost emotionless. She wasn’t used to Robyn being this silent or looking this upset. She caught Robyn’s eye and raised her brow. Robyn shook her head as if to say nothing was wrong. Joyce gave her an odd look and Robyn chuckled before mouthing, “I’m fine. I promise.” Joyce wasn’t totally satisfied but nodded her head anyway.

“Mommy, can we go paint now?” Erica asked.”

“Sure. Make sure you change into your paint clothes and put those in the hamper.

Erica nodded her head, “yes Ma’am.”

Erin and Erica tossed the plates into the sink and ran out of the kitchen. Chris turned to Robyn, “they paint?”

“Yea. Nothing serious. They’ve always had a knack for the arts.”

“That’s great.”

“Yea, I need to get back to my work, y’all are welcomed to stay if you want.”

“No Angel, we’ll leave you to it. We’ll say bye to the girls on our way out.”

“Ok Mama J. Chris, it was nice seeing you. Y’all have a safe trip back home.”

“Of course. And don’t work so hard, Robyn.”

“Yes Ma’am.”

Joyce and Robyn hugged and Robyn gave Chris a little wave before leaving the kitchen.

Joyce and Chris left and climbed into the car. Chris pulled out of the driveway and was halfway onto the highway when Joyce asked, “what’s going on with you and Robyn?”

“Mama, what are you talking about?”

“It’s like y’all are afraid to talk to each other.”

“What? We spoke when I was moving the stuff into her garage.”

“Oh. What about?”

“I saw some pictures of the girls and asked if they were her daughters, she said yea and that her husband died a year after they were born and that’s pretty much it.”

“I’m surprised she told you about Michael. She doesn’t talk about him much.”

“Did you ever meet him?”

“Yea, he was pretty nice guy.”

“How long were they together?”

“About 8 months before they got married.”

“Really?”

“Yea, the wedding was so pretty but then she went into labor at the altar so…”

“That’s crazy. I can’t imagine how everyone felt.”

“Yea. So when you gonna give me some grandchildren?”

“Whenever Tiana’s ready, she didn’t want to have any while I was active so now that we got time, we’ll see what happens.”

“Good. I need some more to spoil.”

“Mama, you are too much.”

“What?”

Chris laughed as they continued driving.

Time Heals….Chapter One

“If anyone doesn’t believe in this union, speak now or forever hold your peace.”

He looked back around the banquet hall, the face he was searching for nowhere to be found. Peeking between a small group of latecomers, he saw her. She stared him directly in the face for a few moments before turning to leave the room. He shook his head as he turned back to the bride, the minister soon pronouncing them husband and wife.

                                                 ~~~~~
8 Years Later….
She frowned at the Facebook notification that popped up on her locked phone screen. Swiping it off without even looking at it, she turned her attention to the park sparsely filled with children.
“Erin! Erica! It’s time to go,” she exclaimed. Two identical little girls ran over and stood in front of her with dimpled smiles. She smiled as she handed each of them a small book bag with their respective names stitched across the front, “How about McDonald’s for dinner?”
“Oooh Mommy, can we have nuggets?” Erica asked excitedly.
“Of course, whatever you want.”
“Yes!” The girls high-fived each other and their mother chuckled lowly. Each girl grabbed one of her hands and they left to her late-model four-door car that was parked in the lot.
                                             ~~~~~~~~

He stared around the nearly empty apartment. For eight years he’d been surrounded by what his wife liked to call their Parisian paradise but due to an unforeseen injury, he was forced to leave and return back home. He’d been in the military since he was 19 years old and was transferred to England two weeks after his wedding and 23rd birthday. His medical discharge from active duty wasn’t as much as a shock as his move to a desk position. Of course, the government paid for him to get his college degree in Business but he’d never thought he’d have to use it so soon. He hated desk jobs but with damaged nerves in both legs and a damn near metal knee, he really didn’t have a choice but to return to civilian service. When his superior asked where he’d like to go, something in him said Texas so to Houston, he’d be returning.

He sat down on the bed just as his phone rang. He slid over the answer key and placed it on speaker, “hello?”

“Hey, Angel.”

“Hey Mama,” he smiled as his mother’s voice floated out his phone. He really needed her comfort at this moment.

“What you doing?”

“Just packing up some little things I and Tiana are gonna take on the plane with us.”

“When do you move into your new house?”

“On the 15th so we’re gonna be staying in a hotel for the first few days after we land.”

“Well, I and Christine have this big party planned for y’all. Isn’t it a coincidence you left right after your wedding and you’re coming back right after your anniversary?”

“It’s a scary coincidence. I don’t know about this though.”

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t know how to adjust to a 9 to 5. I’ve never had one.”

“Oh Baby, just relax. It’s not like you’re doing something you’ve never done before. Let’s just be glad you got the recommendation for the job and you were accepted. You know you wouldn’t be able to handle just sitting at home either.”

“That’s true.”

“Did you tell anyone you were coming home?”

“Outside of family? No, not really.”

“So Robyn knows?”

“Mama, I haven’t spoken to Robyn in 8 years and you know that.”

“No, I didn’t know that. Why haven’t you been in contact with her?”

“Our lives were just going in two different directions and we kinda grew apart. She moved from Texas anyway.”

“No, she moved from Houston. She stays in Dallas now.”

“And how do you know that?”

“I talk to her almost every day and I thought you did too.”

“Unfortunately no.”

“Chris, y’all were best friends.”

“I know but we grew up.”

“Well, would it be ok if I let her know and invite her to the party?”

“Of course, if she can come. The more the merrier.”

“Great. I’ll call her as soon as I’m done with you. Where’s Tiana?”

“She went out to dinner with some of her friends since we’ll be busy right before we leave.”

“Oh ok. Well tell her I said hello.”

“I will Mama.”

“And y’all be safe. I don’t need anymore scary phone calls about you getting hurt.”

He chuckled, “yes Ma’am.”

“Talk to you later. Love you.”

“Love you too, Mama. Later.”

He hung up the phone.

Robyn sat down on the couch and Erin settled in between her legs, “Erica, bring the spray bottle and the hair box to me, please.”

“Yes, Mommy.”

Robyn took Erin’s hair out of the ponytail and started finger-detangling it as she waited for Erica to come back to the living room. A few moments later, Erica appeared with the requested items and Robyn’s ringing phone.

“Mommy, Mama Joyce is calling you,” Erica said.”

“Answer it for me, please.”

Erica slid over the answer bar, “Hello Ms. Fenty’s phone, Erica speaking.”

“Hi Cutie pie, it’s your Mama Joyce,” Joyce replied.

“Hi, Mama Joyce.”

“How are you, Sweetheart?”

“Good.”

“That’s good. Is your mommy nearby?”

“Yes, Ma’am.”

“Can you put her on the phone for me?”

“Uh huh.”

Erica held out the phone and Robyn took it, “hello?”

“Hey Angel, how are you?”

“I’m good Mama J. How are you?’

“I’m good. So you’ll never guess who I spoke to today?”

“Your son.”

“That was too easy.”

“It really was. How is he?”

“He’s well. He’s actually moving back to Texas.”

“What? Why?”

“He got injured so they took him off active duty. His superior was able to get him this civilian job back here in Houston.”

“Oh, that’s really great.”

Joyce frowned on her end of the phone, “you don’t sound too happy.”

“Mama J, I haven’t spoken or even thought about Chris in 8 years. I’m not exactly sure how I’m supposed to feel about him coming back.”

“I’d thought you’d be happy to have your best friend back.”

“Ex-best friend,” Robyn corrected.

“Oh. Did something happen between the two of you?”

“What? No. I’m just saying I can’t really call someone I haven’t spoken to or seen in 8 years my best friend, you know?”

“I guess. Well if you can come, I’d like you to attend his welcome home party.”

“I’ll see if I can get a babysitter. What day is it?”

“The 16th of this month.”

“That’s a Saturday?”

“Yea.”

“I should be able to come at least for an hour or two, the girls have dance class and gymnastics practice until about 7.”

“Great. The party starts around 5 so everything should work out.”

“Ok. Guess I’ll see you then.”

“You gonna bring the girls by the house this week? Christine wants to see them.”

“Yea. I can bring them tomorrow.”

“Ok good. I’ma let you get back to what you were doing. Talk to you later.”

“Alright Mama J. Later.”

They hung up.

                                                    ~~~~~
“Tiana! We have to go, what are you doing?” Chris exclaimed as he dragged his luggage to the front door of the now empty apartment. All their furniture had been sold and all their other trinkets and personal belongings had been shipped and were on their way back to Houston. It felt really bittersweet. He was glad to be going home but was gonna miss the home and relationships he had built here in Paris. Just as he went to call his wife again, she appeared with her Chanel purse perched just so on her wrist and her coat tossed over her forearm.
“Chris, you really need to relax. Our flight doesn’t leave for another 2 hours.”
“But traffic is horrible and we’re taking a taxi. I don’t wanna chance it, ok?”
“Yes, Sir.”
“Don’t do that.”
Tiana giggled as she moved closer to Chris and pecked his lips, “you excited?”
“A little. You?”
“I’m just ready to get back on solid ground. You know me and planes don’t get along.”
“Yes Baby, I know.”
“We got time to stop and eat?”
“We can get something at the airport. I think there’s a Fauchon cafe’ inside.”
“Great. That’s my favorite place.”
“So you ready?”
“Yup. Let’s go.”
